Armenian Genocide: "He was ordered to pay one franc as damages for his statements on the Armenian genocide in Ottoman Turkey."
[edit]The article currently states, cited to a number of publications in French, that, as a result of the "genocide denial" prosecutions:
- " He was ordered to pay one franc as damages for his statements on the Armenian genocide in Ottoman Turkey.[38] Three other court cases against Bernard Lewis failed in the Paris tribunal, including one filed by the Armenian National Committee of France and two filed by Jacques Trémollet de Villers."
Although not cited in the article, the text is similar to the version given in this Haaretz article:
- "Lewis’ revisionism on the Armenian question led to his being charged and tried in France for denial a genocide, a crime there, and in the mid-1990s, he was ordered by a French court to pay one franc in damages after losing a case. Three other lawsuits against him in another French court, however, failed."
However, the judgement of the court, which is available here and here, appears to detail further, much higher, payments:
- "Adjudges Bernard Lewis liable to pay to each plaintiff, the FORUM OF ARMENIAN ASSOCIATIONS IN FRANCE, and to the INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE AGAINST RACISM AND ANTISEMITISM the sum of one franc in damages;
- Orders the publication of excerpts of this judgment in the next issue of the newspaper Le Monde to appear after the date on which this judgment shall be made final, the cost of this insertion, to be borne by the defendant, not to exceed twenty thousand (20,000) francs;
- States that no grounds exist for provisional execution; Adjudges Bernard Lewis to pay, pursuant to Article 700 of the New Code of Civil Procedure, the sum of ten thousand (10,000) francs to the Forum of Armenian Associations in France, and the sum of four thousand (4,000) francs to the International League Against Racism and anti-Semitism;
- Sentences the defendant to costs."
From the "On the Merits of the Claims" section of the judgement it can be seen that the court found: "the fact remains that it was by concealing information contrary to his thesis that the defendant was able to assert that there was no "serious proof" of the Armenian genocide; consequently, he failed in his duties of objectivity and prudence by offering unqualified opinions on such a sensitive subject; and his remarks, which could unfairly rekindle the pain of the Armenian community, are tortious and justify compensation under the terms set forth hereafter"
There is an article on Armeniapedia about Bernard Lewis here, which links to an English translation of a Le Monde source article about the case here.

Why is there an entire paragraph to discredit his views on "Armenian genocide"?
[edit]He simply explains here what is going on. (Suggest moving forward q takes a bit of time)

Yet the entire paragraph is trying to discredit his fact based opinion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.230.172.165 (talk) 15:17, 15 October 2021 (UTC)
There is a post on the Fringe Theories Noticeboard pertaining to this article's discussion of Lewis' denial of the Armenian genocide. It's here: Wikipedia:Fringe theories/Noticeboard#How to handle Armenian genocide denial on Bernard Lewis? I am soliciting input on how to handle Lewis' claims so that we're complying with the recommendations of the WP:FRINGE guideline. Possibilities may include:
- Stating explicitly in the lead that Lewis' view is rejected by mainstream historiography.
- Shortening or removing the block quot in the "Armenian genocide" section.
